Requirements of your candidature

If you haven't read anything about this topic, this is a good place to start:

What is expected of Research Degree Students

As a research degree candidate there are a number of University and Faculty requirements that you must meet. Failure to meet these requirements can result in your candidature being discontinued.

Code of Practice for Supervisors, Advisors and Research Degree Candidates

You can download (pdf, 55kb) the Code of Practice or view it online.

Progress Reports

It is a University requirement that all research students who are enrolled and are not on leave of absence or under examination for that semester, complete and return a progress report each semester (Rule 3.4.9.1 & 3.5.8.1). See Progress Reports section below for further information.

Doctoral or Masters Assessment

It is a university requirement that all students undertake a formal assessment during the early phase of their candidature (Rules 3.4.9.1 & 3.5.9.1). The assessment takes the form of a presentation, which is given to a panel of examiners. On the basis of this assessment it is decided whether the candidature continues or needs to be re-examined. See Doctoral and Masters Assessments Section below below for further information.

Final Doctoral Presentation

It is a University requirement (Rule 3.5.10.6) that candidates for doctoral degrees make an oral presentation of their work in front of a panel or audience. This must be completed before the thesis is submitted for examination and should be held within the final six months before submission. Presentations may be scheduled to take place in one of the two Faculty Research Weeks each year. Please contact the Student Officer: Research and Graduation for further details.

Graduate Workshops

It is a requirement of the Faculty that research degree candidates present their work orally to an audience of their peers once a year for part-time students and twice annually for full-time students (See Faculty Handbook). Presentations are designed to give students the opportunity to discuss their work, their achievements and difficulties, in ways that will enhance their project. Presentations are scheduled during the Faculty Research Weeks and achieve most through prior planning between student and supervisor. If you are due to present your name will appear on the program for the Faculty Research Week.

Attendance at Faculty Research Weeks

It is a requirement of the Faculty that research degree candidates attend the Faculty Research Weeks (see Faculty Handbook). If you are unable to attend you need to contact the Student Officer: Research and Graduation. It is expected that all students will attend unless exceptional circumstances arise.

Notifying the Faculty and the University of changes in your details

All students are expected to notify the Faculty's Student Officer: Research and Graduation of changes of address, email address, phone numbers, supervision arrangements and candidature details. This is vital as we require current details in order to contact you about matters affecting your candidature.
