Australian Midwifery Competency Project

Australian Midwifery Compentency Project The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council funded an exciting project for midwifery in Australia.

The project researched the role and scope of practice of midwives and developed national competency standards for midwifery. The project was conducted by a team of researchers from three universities. These are the Centre for Midwifery, Child and Family Health at the University of Technology Sydney; University of South Australia; and, Edith Cowan University in Western Australia. The research team was Caroline Homer, Jan Pincombe, Carol Thorogood, Pat Brodie, Nicky Leap and Sue Kildea. The project officer is Lyn Passant.

This project involved consumers, midwives, education providers, managers, academics and other key stakeholders from around Australia.

The outcomes of the project were:
1. A comprehensive report on research into the contemporary role and scope of practice for midwives in Australia;
2. The development of a generic description for midwives on entry to practice;
3. The development and validation of national competency standards for midwives in Australia; and
4. A strategy and tools for evaluation and review of the role and standards for midwives

The project had five parts and included telephone interviews, surveys, workshops, forums and observation of midwifery practice.

The project is now complete and a copy of the National Competency Standards for the Midwife are available from the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council.
