What we do

The Centre offers health services teaching and research activities covering:

  • services provided by the health sector and the ways in which institutions provide these services (for example, health service strategies, performance and monitoring)
  • workforce and labour trends (for example, Occupational Health and Safety, cultural diversity, skill mix, role changes in the health workforce)
  • the context in which health services are delivered (structural and funding frameworks and the capacity to translate policy into effective strategies)
  • the outcomes of service provision (including the translation of corporate policy and models of care into measurable outcomes through the use of benchmarking and performance management)
  • development and analysis of healthcare regulation and policy.

Consulting and Community Service

The Centre for Health Services Management supports and assists health care services with operational, day-to-day management and decision support activities. In collaboration with industry, the Centre provides consultation packages specifically tailored to suit the needs of the requesting health agency.

The CHSM provides specific consultancy and advisory services for health care services to develop and support industry best practice in health services by:

  • increasing the efficiency of management systems to improve quality and safety in healthcare
  • strengthening the capacity to quickly interpret and implement new knowledge from research
  • improving workforce planning and education for future health needs.

Features of the Centre

The Centre's programs are built on the belief that current and relevant knowledge is crucial to the development of 'best practice' and that collaboration between clinicians, managers (clinical and non-clinical) and researchers is central to effecting change.

The Centre for Health Services Management:

  • coordinates the delivery of postgraduate health management courses targeted particularly at clinicians and health service managers who are seeking to enhance their professional expertise with specialist knowledge, skills and competence in the area of managing health services
  • stresses the practical application of policy and theory to everyday challenges and practice
  • understands the pressures and stresses within the current health service environment
  • offers flexible study options for both local and international students
  • undertakes research into current, critical and relevant areas of health services management and planning
  • maintains strong links with industry
  • engages a local multidisciplinary team of senior academics and researchers
  • enhances its team with international collaborators and researchers
  • develops its programs with guidance from an Advisory Board consisting of senior executives from the health industry to ensure the relevance and currency of the applied approach to health services management and research.
